(The Redoubt)

Jasmine frowned as she looked down from the redoubt. There was no way to clearly see the village from where they were. Trees got in the way. However, she didn’t need to see everything to know that the village and its fields were burning. That wasn’t good. Sure, all the villagers and any supplies and personal treasures they might have had been stowed in the mines, but still, it meant that there would be many wounded down below.

Yet, her place was here, guarding the redoubt, to make sure that the goblins couldn’t flank the forces, and come at them from above. So far, there had only been probing attacks by the goblins. Having to work their way uphill while mages, archers, and a golem, of all things, rained fire down upon them in the narrow track they could follow certainly made the goblins think twice about trying this path.

However, the golem was the only one that had unlimited ammunition. Even then, they would have to be careful eventually, or the damn thing would bring the mountain down on their heads by accident. Mages weren’t in quite as bad a shape, since their mana would recover over time, but the archers and the alchemist only had so much that they could do with the materials at hand.

“Saevel, Ran,” she said, softly. Even so, she knew her party members standing next to her were paying attention.

“What is it boss?” Ran asked, the rogue still watching over the wall.

“I need you two to slip over the wall, and go recover as many arrows as you can before it gets too dark to see any more. Night’s falling fast, and I have a feeling we’re going to want all the arrows we can get before the end.”

Ran looked over to Savel, and the elven barbarian nodded, once. “We’ll be as quick as we can. Just have the golem hold off on throwing stones at everything that moves, yeah?”

Jasmine laughed. “Well, try not to look like a goblin, and I’ll consider it!” That got chuckles from the others in the redoubt. Had to keep the spirits up somehow.

As the two adventurers slipped over the wall, silently as they could, one of the archers from the village stepped up next to her, taking Ran’s place by her side. But his eyes weren’t on the path before them, but on the orange glow below. “What about the village, miss?”

She put a hand on his shoulder, and said, comfortingly as she could. “We knew it was going to be bad, and it’ll get worse before it is better. The fire looks bad from here, sure. But remember that the supplies the village needs to survive, as well as all the children and those unfit to fight, are already safe in the mines. So long as the forces on the wall hold, and we don’t let any goblins past us, they’ll be safe.”

She paused, and then said, “The Guildmaster is down there, along with the Baroness. He promised that, if they’re being overrun, they’ll send a signal to warn us, for all the good it will do.
